I'm an American living in Europe since 1990 and love classic cars, including a 1967 Pontiac GTO, a 1970 Alfa Romeo GT Junior, a 1988 Porsche Carrera 3.2, and now this 1970 Series 2A.
I was in a meeting with one of my distributors (a classic Land Rover restoration specialist) in Spain last year when our conversation wandered to classic Land Rovers. I always liked the Series 2A due to the lack of plastic in the cab. I also liked the practicality of the pick-up and preferred the short bed, and had been looking for one like this for years. As I now live in Belgium, I needed a left hand drive and preferred a petrol engine over diesel. After a short search, my distributor found two examples not far from his location east of Madrid.
Together we decided on the one in the best condition (albeit a bit pricier), which had recently gone through a total ground-up restoration including the engine, which was rebuilt by an engine expert from the old Santana factory. We found a cab roof allowing for more flexibility during the winter, added an original heater and a trailer hitch, and then moved the spare tire from the front bonnet to the tail gate. I then had the car shipped up to Belgium and, realizing the car was too slow for our highways, decided on the Roamerdrive after extensive research on quality, reliability, and quietness. After installing it, I was VERY happy with the results, seeing as how it ticked off all my requirements.
I'm an avid fly fisherman and hunter. I also love collecting mushrooms and as such decided together with my Italian wife to move to Trentino in Italy. While the car is still somewhat new to me, I look forward to using the "donkey" in the Dolomites in the years to come, and can only highly recommend the Roamerdrive to anyone looking to go a bit faster down the road.
